TLKM Recovers 66% of ATM Services

Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk (TLKM) has recovered 66 percent or 7,658 sites from 11,574 Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) sites used by automated teller machines (ATMs). The company is targeting the recovery process of 15,000 sites of Telkom 1 satellite subscribers that experienced anomalies to be completed by September 10, 2017.

Alex Sinaga, President Director of TLKM, said that as much as 87 percent or 2,980 sites for non-ATM customers have been restored. “From a normal site, we do not have repointing to Telkom 2, Telkom 3S or any other satellites. There is another solution in the form of fiber optic connection and M to M (machine to machine) amounting to 1,013 sites,” said Alex.

The company is still calculating losses due to anomalies experienced by the Telkom 1 satellite. The company will also provide compensation to customers for the disruption. “The company and Lockheed Martin are currently exploring the cause of anomalies on the satellite. But we have to evacuate first because satellite technology is very complicated,” said Alex.

Rudiantara, Minister of Communications and Informatics, said that Kominfo is helping TLKM secure Telkom 1 satellite orbit slot which will be used by the Telkom 4 satellite. “We have reported to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) so that the satellite orbit slot is not leased by other parties because it will be
used by Telkom 4,” said Rudiantara.

Alex said the company will not accelerate the launch of Telkom 4 satellite with this incident. “According to the contract signed in 2016, the launch of Telkom 4 satellite will be conducted in August 2018,” said Alex. (*)
